 ZCCN CALLS FOR DETAILED STUDY ON CARBON,MARKETS TRADING

The Zambia Climate Change Network (ZCCN) has called for a detailed study on carbon market and trading in the country.

This came to light today, when the network  submitted a memorandum to the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, Lands, and Natural Resources. 

The memorandum specifically focuses on the adoption of work to conduct a detailed study on Carbon Markets and Trading in Zambia, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges inherent in the space.

This submission aligns with ZCCN's mandate on policy influence, a strategic pillar under its priority areas. 

Making the submission, in Lusaka, Network National Coordinator Ms Lydia Chimambo reaffirmed the network's commitment to influence policies that promote environmental sustainability and resilience among others.

Therefore, as a National Platform on Climate Change, ZCCN recognizes the urgency of robust policies and frameworks to navigate the complexities of carbon markets and trading. and today's submission is part of the commitment to influencing policies that promote sustainable, resilience and environmental stewardship.

ZCCN has been engaging key stakeholders in carbon business with the recent being the engagement meeting with the House of Chiefs in which a number of gaps were identified.

And Presenting the findings of the research conducted by the Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) on carbon market and trade business in Zambia to the house of chiefs, during the engagement meeting, TIZ Programmes Assistant Sandie Sikazwe,said there serious gaps in the carbon business the country.

Meanwhile House of Chiefs Chairperson Chief  Chisunka stressed the need for involvement of traditional leaders in issues of climate change including development of legal framework especially at the moment when carbon market and trading is taking centre stage in rural areas.

The traditional leader observed. "now we hàve seen carbon credit businesses and investors have gone into traditional areas."

" people outside our country are coming into our chiefdoms to look for places, we need Civil Society Organizations, Non Governmental Organizations and experts to help us .Working together with government, CSOs we can find means to calculate carbon credits,"Chief Chief Chisunka adds.
