TAKE LEAD IN CARBON MARKET,TRADING, ZCCN IMPLORES TRADITIONAL LEADERS
By Alfonso Kasongo
An alliance of over 20 Civil Society Organizations championing the fight against climate change in Zambia has encouraged traditional leaders especially the Royal Highnesses across the country to take a leading role in the carbon market and trading conversations.
Zambia Climate Change Network (ZCCN) Board Chairperson Mutamba observes that some chiefdoms have been approached by entities dealing in carbon credits business hence expressing fear that some traditional leaders may have no capacity to provide precise direction with regards to carbon market and trade.
Speaking during an engagement meeting with the house of Chiefs on Carbon Market and Trading in Lusaka, Mr. Mutamba says the resources that the network is fighting to be conserved are in the custodian of the traditional leaders hence an opportunity for the network to heighten the conversations to bridge the information gaps that exist in the carbon credit business.
ZCCN Board Chairperson Mr. Mutamba speaking during the engagement meeting |
" We realise that the Royal Highneses are the custodians of land we talk about , the community we serve. They are responsible for the well-being of the nation because they own land, the resources we want to conserve.Yes carbon market and trade are being discussed at various levels, therefore, the Royal Highneses must be in the forefront understanding the conversations surrounding carbon market and trading, " Mr. Mutamba said.
And Mr. Mutamba further stresses the need to create opportunities which should bring technocrats and traditional leaders in the carbon credit businesses.
Meanwhile he commended cooperating partners including Pan African Climate Justice (PACJA) for continued support.
But the Transparent International Zambia (TIZ) Chapter has discloses that there has no transparent in the processes of carbon market and trading in the country.
Speaking on behalf of TiZ , Patrick Bwalya, therefore, recommended the need to enter in contacts on the equal basis as the current nature of partnerships agreement (concessions) are not fair and only favours the companies involved trading in the carbon credits business.
Mr. Bwalya also recommended for the need to build capacity among members of the community forest management group
